February, 04 and 05, 2023

Course in French 2x 2 hours via zoom - 2PM to 4PM French time
The course is recorded and available for 1 month after the live.

Also called the threads of the Virgin, filigrees have been used from the end of the Roman period to the beginning of the Renaissance. These ornaments are based on the stylisation of plant shapes. Made with pointed nibs, these patterns are numerous during the Gothic period. During this course, we will study a generic type of filigree present throughout Europe in the 14th century and see how to fill large spaces with basic patterns variations, how to adorn initials with borders and how to invade the margins with antennas.

Course in French 2x 2 hours via zoom - 2PM to 4PM French time
The course is recorded and available for 2 weeks after the live.

During these two sessions we will see how to build filigree patterns based on historical forms and arrange them in a way that creates a coherent and dynamic whole. We will study the importance of spaces and their position, how to intertwine lines that are supposed to remain isolated in order to create modern filigrees full of vitality.

By taking inspiration from the forms created at that time and by adding others, we will try to obtain a balance that respects the breathing of the text in order to obtain compositions that are balanced and avoid, for example, caesura at the end of the lines. The course is open to everyone, experienced calligraphers or beginners.
